Popeyes Pizza, Upton Road

Popeyes Pizza on Upton Road has applied to Wirral’s Licensing Department for an extension to its hours, it has asked for permission to remain open until 2am every morning.   Personally with so many hot food takeaways, well over a dozen in the immediate area I can see absolutely no reason for granting these late hours.       Just a few doors away, Sabs Kebabs was denied permission to remain open after 11:30pm, if the Council is to be consistent then it must treat this application in the same manner.

If anyone has an objection or wishes to make representation they can do so by contacting the Council’s Licensing Section by writing to:  Licensing Authority, Wirral Borough Council, Town Hall, Brighton Street, Wallasey CH44 8ED or via email by clicking here   All objections representations must be made by the 17th February

Another Food Outlet?

I have just been notified of another planning application for a Cafe/food outlet in Moreton, this one on Pasture Road at the site of the old VBM Soft Furnishing shop.       I have yet to see the full plans but this application is described below.    As more information becomes available I will post it here.    I will also do a letter drop to the area notifying local residents of the application.

Application number: APP/10/01384   – Date Registered: 23/11/2010

Applicant: Miss K Clement    Agent: Designmix Utd Architects

Location: V B M Soft Furnishing, 21 PASTURE ROAD, MORETON, CH46 7TG

Proposal: Change of use from A1 to A3 food and drink for use as a cafe to provide food to the public and for catering for parties and weddings etc and alterations to rear elevation

Its Potentially ‘Hot Food Takeaway’ #14!

Tonight I will be attending Wirral’s Planning Commmittee asking them to refuse the planning application for yet another ‘Hot Food Takeaway in Moreton.      In an earlier blog I referred to this as hot food takeaway #12, however having recalculated the amount of takeaways from Moreton Cross up to the jinction of Millhouse Lane it appears I got it wrong.

If the one at Remax is approved this evening it will actually be Hot Food Takeaway #14.   The other 13 being, Oriental City, Eastern Tandoori, Baxters Traditional Fish and Chips, Popeyes Pizza, Sabs Kebabs, East Ocean, Moreton Kebabs, Junaki, The Royal Taste, Nazims Pizza, Subway, The Great Wall, Marias, add to these the proliferation of Cafes, the bakeries, Sayers, Waterfields and the soon to open Greggs, along with the restaurants and the pub food outlets, then this application surely is an application too many.

I have only picked out the takeaways within the immediate area, there are more in Moreton, Town Meadow Lane, Chapelhill Road, Reeds Lane, Hoylake Road etc.   Don’t misunderstand me, I want to see Moreton as a thriving town, with all the shops open all offering a variery of goods, but for whatever reason it appears that Moreton has become the takeaway capital of Wirral.

Weeks Round Up!

Last week was a busy week.    Apart from my ‘day jobs’ I also had a day and a half in London on Merseytravel business, rushing back on Thursday afternoon to make sure I was home in time for Wirral’s Cabinet meeting.

So whats happened in our patch this week, I have listed below some of the highlights (or should that be lowlights) of the week.

  1. I have learned that REMAX ‘Hot Food Takeaway #12’ will be going forward to Wirral’s Planning Committee this coming Tuesday 9th November commencing at 6pm at Wallasey Town Hall.    Sadly planning officers are recommending approval, despite a petition of well over a hundred signatures.    I will be attending asking the planning committee to refuse the application.   How many Takeaways do we need in Moreton?   Click HERE
  2. I was at Wirral’s Licensing Panel on Friday to speak in opposition to the application made by Sabs Kebabs.  The Kebab House wants a license to stay open until 2am.     The application had to be deferred because one of the Licensing Panel Members had also determined the planning application for the same premises and therefore could not take part in this.   I will let people know when the new date is.
  3. On Saturday, following many rumours we have it confirmed via a website that a Brothel  ‘A house of Ill Repute’ is now trading in Moreton.

That is just a flavour of the week.   On top of that of course is all the telephone messages, the proliferation of emails, the mail to be dealt with and of course all the papers that have to be read in preparation for coming meetings.    Just as well I enjoy what I do!

Sabs Kebabs – Licensing Application to be Decided

Readers of the blog and the wider Moreton community will be aware that Hot Food takeaway #11 – Sabs Kebabs (formerly Cartridge World) applied for licensing permission to stay open until 2am in the morning.    Local residents have objected, as have I, and although there is no official representation from Merseyside Police Licensing Section, Moreton’s Police Neighbourhood Inspector, Peter Kolokotroni has written to the Council’s Licensing Department expressing his concerns.  The application will be considered by Wirral’s Licensing Panel at Wallasey Town Hall, on Friday 5th November at 10am.     The meeting is open to the public so if you have concerns about this please come along.

Hot Food Takeaway Number 12

I have just been notified that a planning application has been submitted for yet ANOTHER hot food takeaway in Moreton.

Application number: APP/10/01161

Date Registered: 21/09/2010, Applicant: Mr G Jones, Agent: Mr C W Jones

Location: Remax Estate, 283 HOYLAKE ROAD, MORETON, CH46 0RL

Proposal: Change of use of ground floor of premises from offices to hot food take away.    Plans will be available to view on the Council’s website within 2 working days from the date of this email.

As you can details at the moment are sketchy, however when the full application is published on the Council website we have have a better idea of the type of outlet.     If approved this will become the 12th takeaway in the heart of the village.

It Appears it is NOT a Kosher Application

Readers of the blog will recall that I questioned if a Licensing application for a Hot Food Takeaway on Holake Road was in fact a genuine application.  You can read that here

It appears from the email I have received (reproduced below) that the applicant has not submitted a valid application so the notification displayed on the shutters will have to be removed.

Dear Councillor Blakeley and Councillor Taylor,

I refer to your emails regarding the application for a Premises Licence in respect of the above premises. I can advise that this application has yet to be approved due to the application not being complete.

Once the application is approved by this office the 28 day consultation period will begin and it will appear on the public list. The notice on the premises is not correctly completed and advice will be given to the applicant in respect of this.

If you require any further information please contact me.

All Change!

‘Not a lot of people know that’ words attributed to Michael Caine, but actually spoken by Peter Sellars who was doing an impression of Michael Caine.   What relevance has that to this post?   Whenever I think of The Italian Job, I think of Micheal Caine, and The Italian Job is the name of the new restaurant in Moreton, formerly Ruis on Upton Road.  Welcome to Moreton, I will be giving it a try with Mrs B very soon.

I also noticed that work is now going inside the old Cartridge Shop, again on Upton Road, that has permission for a hot food takeaway, and today work was going on at the old Fosters Greengrocers, yep you guessed it on Upton Road, that’s advertising that it will be opening up soon as a traditional Fish and Chip Shop, add to that the Licensing Application for Crossbar (upton Road) and its All Change in Moreton!

Takeaway City!

It appears that Moreton, particularly around Moreton Cross is becoming a favourite area for new ‘Hot Food Takeaway’ planning applications.

Currently there are three takeaways on Upton Road, with the former Fosters Greengrocers also having planning permission for change of use to a takeaway.   Across the roundabout on Pasture Road there are a further four takeaways, making seven operational with one more to come.    On Hoylake Road next door to Waterfields at 223 Hoylake Road, planning permission has been granted for a further hot food takeaway, once opened that will make nine.

Now two more planning applications have been submitted for a further two ‘Hot Food Takeaways’.   First one is application number: APP/09/06438  at, Lauries the Jewellers, 233 Hoylake Road, Moreton, Wirral, CH46 0PF.   Change of use from vacant shop to hot food takeaway,  with the second application, APP/09/06384 being made for change of use for a ‘Hot Food Takeaway at, Cartridge Swop Shop, 201 Hoylake Road, Moreton, Wirral, CH46 0SJ.

Now don’t misunderstand me I welcome all new businesses into the Town, and I am always happy to see empty shop premises brought back into use, however with seven operational takeaways close to the Cross, with a further two with planning permission, do we really need anymore in this already overcrowded cluster of food takeaways?
