Thank you

Thank you to everyone who has put their faith and trust in me. I am delighted, honoured and privileged to be elected to serve for a fifth consecutive term in Moreton and Saughall Massie. Be assured that I will continue to do my very best for you all.

I am also delighted that the voters of Moreton and Saughall Massie soundly rejected Labours dirty tactics campaign, with their onslaught of personal attacks on me questioning my commitment, honesty and integrity.    The Labour campaign was one of, if not the dirtiest campaign I have ever seen in any ward or constituency throughout the UK.   Here in Moreton and the Wallasey Constituency the Labour Party have shown themselves up for what they really are!  Anyway enough of them.

I’m Backing Chris Because….

Tommy“As a local trader, I want to see Moreton do well and that means sometimes we need the support of the Council.

Chris has been a big help to us.  He keeps in touch and we see him out and about across the area all the time.”

I’m Backing Chris Because…

“I like the way the Town Hall never gets one over on Chris!”

Lucy Donnelly“I’m 99 years old and I remember when, after the war, we had Labour Councillors of real principle.  Now, all Labour seem to want is power and the trappings of power with the fancy staircases and the posh carpets in the Town Hall. Too many of the Councillors seem to have forgotten why they were elected.

“That’s why I’m voting for Chris Blakeley – he had the courage to stand up and speak out against the Councils outrageous plans to remove the ‘Pass for Life’ given as retirement gift to long serving employees.”

The Beginning of the End

Earlier today, along with my colleagues Cllr Steve Williams and Cllr Simon Mountney I went along to the Valentines Day Community event which I organised with Wirral Partnership Homes (WPH).

The event was to celebrate the start of the long awaited demolition and redevelopment of the eyesore shops and maisonettes on Town Meadow Lane.          I have been campaigning for this day for 12 years and it was a very proud moment for me to see that campaign, with the total support of the local community, come to fruition.

It was a great couple of hours with music by Seven Waves Radio, fish and chips supplied by Sid from the Town Meadow Supper Bar, Cakes supplied by Debbie the Hairdresser and soft drinks supplied by Bhullars General Store, there was a bouncey castle, face painting, ballons and much much more.

I was absolutely delighted to be asked to perform the official ceremony, and instead of turning the first sod, I ‘Cut the Cake’ with WPH Chief Exec Brian Simpson.    The cake, baked and decorated by Debbie was designed to look like a replica of the development, really clever.

Well over 200 local residents, adults and children came along to celebrate the end of a long campaign.    Wates the developer is on site to start work in earnest on Monday 20th Feb and the whole project to demolish the site, provide three new shops and 24 new dwellings is expected to take around 18 months to complete.

Huge thank you’s to Sid, Debbie, Mr Bhullar, Seven Waves Radio, officers and the Board of WPH and most of all to the community who have been with me every step of the way.   Today is a testament to your perseverence, and together we have made this possible.

That Was The Week That Was!

Well another full varied hard working, tiring and really enjoyable week.  Monday, Tuesday two full days in work and two evenings on the knocker, great responses.   Wednesday it was on the early train to London and into Parliament to spend some time with Esther’s PA and go through the databases we use.    In the afternoon it was off to a reception in the Speakers House to meet with the Interns who have been succesful to take part in the Speakers Social Mobility Scheme, Esther was succesful in being selected to mentor one of the Interns, Luke starts tomorrow.     It was great to have a chat with the Speaker and to see his house, sumptuous .     After that it was on to a meeting of SIGOMA in the house before heading off for something to eat and a couple of beers before getting back to the hotel for the night.

Thursday morning I was at a meeting with the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) the body that administers MPs expenses.   The meeting was good and hopefully they will take on board many of the suggestions I made to make the system simpler.   Then it was on the train back to Liverpool to get back to Wallasey Town Hall for a Funds for you Panel, followed by a Licensing meeting to discuss Polling Stations, finally home at 7:50pm.

Friday it was back to work, then home to stuff envelopes.    Saturday I was out delivering, not forgetting catching up with casework.  And of course on Sunday I was honoured to be able to lay the wreath on behalf of the Council at the Moreton Cenotaph.    The service was really good and i think saw the biggest attendance for many years.    This week coming promises to be just as busy with four days of Merseytravel meetings, plus attendance at Councils planning committee and three days door knocking.

A Round Up of Issues!

I thought I would let people know about some of the issues in this neighbourhood.    As well as our regular newsletters, I will try to keep residents informed by email and via the blog as well from now on.

  1. Town Meadow Lane: thank you to everyone who has replied to my recent letters on the demolition of the derelict flats and shops.    The planning application for new houses and shops on the site is expected to be voted on by the Planning Committee on 7th September.    I have submitted a petition to support the plan, signed by more than 300 local residents.
  2. Linear Park play area: I was contacted by a couple of mums, following damage and vandalism.   I would like to thank the Council’s staff for responding quickly to fix the fencing and the bench.
  3. Dog fouling: sadly, there is still a minority of owners who do not clean up after their pets.   I have asked the Council’s new Enforcement Team to visit this part of Moreton and, hopefully, identify some of those owners.
  4. Pasture Road Health Park: the long-awaited Health Park in Pasture Road has been delayed.   It seems that one of the four GP practices has withdrawn from the scheme.     A new planning application will now have to be submitted by the NHS to the Council, to relocate some of the GP practices in Moreton to this single site.
  5. Bermuda Road housing plan: I have spoken with many residents about the plan for six semi detached houses on derelict land at 91 Bermuda Road.   Planning officers have advised me that the current application is likely to be refused because there are not enough ‘affordable’ homes (for example, for first time buyers) in the scheme and therefore it fails to meet the Council’s Interim Planning Policy.   I’ll let residents know when I hear more.
  6. Upton Woods: some residents will be aware that, following the public meeting I attended, the Council has installed the fencing between the woods and Paulsfield Drive. Sadly, the Council’s new Cabinet has refused to install the ‘heavy duty’ barrier between the woods and the bypass. I will be looking for alternative sources for the money to pay for this.
  7. Christchurch School parking: following a meeting with the Headteacher, it has been agreed that a small ‘working party’ will be set up to see what can be done to reduce some of the parking problems around the school.   I will report back on this shortly.
  8. Hot food takeaways: many residents have been in touch with me following concerns about problems at some of the hot food takeaways around Moreton. I have asked for the Council’s Licensing Officers to check that conditions of trading, including opening hours, are not being breached.
  9. Deep clean: last month, the clean up of Moreton Cross saw bags of litter and rubbish removed, graffiti tackled and repairs to ‘street furniture’. The pavements were also power washed. I have asked the Council to make sure litter bins are emptied regularly from now on.
